While watching the final over of our match against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, it would be necessary to repeatedly pinch yourself to comprehend the events that unfolded. Needing an improbable 29 of the last over with 7 wickets down and 28 of the last 5 balls, Southpaw Rinku Singh pulled off an incredible heist, smashing Yash Dayal for 5 maximums to take the Knights home in dramatic fashion & concluded his innings unbeaten on 48 of 21 balls. Deservingly, Rinku took home the Man of the Match award for an innings that will be added to the KKR Hall of Fame and stay in the memories of all our fans and neutrals for years to come.
After electing to bat first, Gujarat Titans posted a mammoth total of 204 runs. Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged 3 wickets. Openers Shubman Gill and WriddhimanSaha were batting with fluency until Narine who looked good again, took the wicket of Saha. Sai Sudarshan and Gill stitched a handsome partnership and steadied the ship for a while but Narine once again returned in the 12th over to dismiss the dangerous Gill.
19-year-old Suyash Sharma continued from where he left off in the previous game. The wily spinner took the wicket of Abhinav Manohar, who was looking in exceptional touch in his brief cameo. A late onslaught from Vijay Shankar however, took the Titans past the 200 mark much to the dismay of the Knights who at one point looked like they could restrict the home team to under 180.
Responding to the humongous total, KKR started off on the right note. Gurbaz looked dangerous in his brief stay at the crease and before he was sent back to the hut by Mohammad Shami. Narayanan Jagadeeshan was dismissed in the very next over with the Knights now down to 28/2 in 4 overs. Venkatesh Iyer, who was once again making an appearance as the impact sub then collaborated with our skipper Nitish Rana to kickstart a fightback for the ages, stitching together a partnership of 100 runs in the next 9 overs. Skipper Rana however fell in the 14th over after a well composed 45 of 29 balls, as the pressure of the required rate continued to rein in on the men at the crease. Venky also fell soon after trying to force the issue for 83 of 40 balls, in an innings which featured 8 boundaries and 5 maximums.
The 17th over saw an incredible turn of events as Russell, Narine and Shardul Thakur became victims of an incredible hattrick, courtesy the leg spin of Rashid Khan. But Rinku Singh on the other end had his own ending to this script.
The rest as they say will be recorded in the history books. Rinku Singh, rose tall among the Knights to take down the Giants in their very own yard and how! 1,6,6,6,6,6 of the 20th over to chase down the total.
